Spring Maintenance Tips for Around the Home and in the Car

Everyone has an extra little spring in their step now that winter is officially behind us, but chances are your home and car are a bit sluggish.Spring maintenance tips for around the home

If you love your home, it will love you back, and one of the best ways to avoid having to submit a home insurance claim is with regular maintenance.

Examine your roof

Your roof helps keep the elements out, and if your shingles are cracked, loose or curling, it may be time to have the roof replaced.

Check your eavestroughs and downspouts

Clean your eavestroughs and check that they are not loose or leaky. Improper drainage can lead to water leaking into the basement. Make sure your downspout extends at least 1.5 metres away (five feet) from your home so that the water drains away from your house and towards the street.

Do some landscaping

During heavy summer rain storms, it’s common for trees and branches to cause damage to a home. If any surrounding trees look unhealthy, it may be time to remove them. Keep healthy trees pruned so that they’re not close enough to the home to do any damage, or take out utility wires should a branch break off or the tree come down.

Repair your driveway and walkways

Repair walkways and driveways that have cracked, broke or become uneven over the winter to minimize the chance of someone tripping and falling on your property.

Check your foundation for leaks or cracks

Mike Holmes’ MakeItRight.ca, says not all foundation cracks are serious and that, in fact, some hairline cracks are normal. “If you find any cracks, either outside or in an unfinished basement, mark them with tape. Check them every 3 months. If they haven’t changed they can be filled in with an epoxy injection. But if the cracks have gotten worse call a structural engineer. Any crack large enough to fit a dime must be checked by a professional.”

Your home isn’t the only thing that has weathered the winter. Your car is likely showing signs of wear and tear too. Primp and prime your car so that it’s ready for the upcoming driving season.

Give your car a good cleaning

Rejuvenate the interior of your car by wiping down the windows, washing the floor mats, getting rid of accumulated trash, and vacuuming the upholstery and carpet to remove any dirt and road salt. Then move on to washing the exterior, starting with the roof and working your way down. Use mild diluted soap and dry your vehicle right away to prevent water spots.

Change your wiper blades

Wiper blades should be changed a couple of times a year, and what better time than during a spring cleaning day?

Switch back to your all-season or summer tires

Winter tires don’t like the warm weather. They’ll wear out faster and won’t work as well as your all-season or summer tires. A good rule-of-thumb is to put your all-seasons on when the temperature is consistently 7° Celsius or warmer.

Check your tire pressure and treads

Check your tire pressure regularly (including the spare). Refer to your owner’s manual to see what your tire’s pressure should be. Also check your tire’s treads: tires are manufactured with wear bars and when the bar becomes exposed, it’s time to look into replacing them.

Take your car into the mechanic for a well-deserved servicing

Take your car to a trusted mechanic for a spring tune-up. This should include everything from checking your car’s oil and other important fluids, to checking the filters, belts, hoses, lights (both interior and exterior) and the battery.

Important Things You Should Check On Your Car Regularly

Important Things You Should Check On Your Car Regularly

Your car gets you safely everywhere you want to go, but it requires that you take good care of it in order to keep running right. Taking care of your car is as important for keeping you on the road and getting where you want to go as it is for your safety. Some of these simple maintenance issues can actually result in an accident or injuries. Take the time to make sure these 10 things are checked regularly and maintained as needed and avoid a potential accident or claim.

The Oil

The oil in your car keeps everything running smoothly, and your car can’t run without the right level of oil. You can check your oil level by yourself easily by simply pulling out the dipstick and seeing where the oil level is. You should take your car in for an oil change on a regular basis as recommended by your vehicle manufacturer or mechanic. Oil changes are one of the most basic car maintenance procedures, and checking your oil an easy way to catch leaks.

The Tire Pressure

A tire pressure gauge is an affordable and easy to use tool that can prevent a flat tire or worse. Tires that are improperly inflated can cause blowouts that lead to accidents. They can also find you stranded on the side of the road. Additionally, the wrong level of inflation affects your fuel efficiency. It’s important to check them regularly and also be aware that the right tire pressure changes based on the outside temperature. Check with the tire manufacturer for the right pressure.

The Brakes

Don’t wait for that screeching sound that tells you the brake pads are getting old. Having your brakes checked regularly by a pro keeps your car safe and on the road. You depend on your brakes to stop your car and prevent an accident, so don’t take them for granted. It’s best to have a pro check your brakes as part of regular maintenance.

The Power Steering Fluid

If you have ever driven a car without power steering, then you know how important it is to check this fluid. Without it your power steering could fail, making it harder to control your car. Like your oil, you can check and refill this one yourself, so make it a habit.

The Alignment

While you will probably notice if your alignment is getting bad, it’s a good idea to have it looked over regularly, as it impacts the way your car handles on the road. Get your alignment adjusted as needed to ensure your car will steer and react the way you want it to when you need to move quickly.
The Antifreeze/Coolant
In Canadian winters, you will need to make sure that you have enough antifreeze in your car to make sure it can run properly. Cold temperatures are hard on your car. On the reverse side of that coin, coolant is also an important fluid to check on your car. Keeping your car running smoothly relies on the right levels of the fluids it needs.

The Tire Tread

It’s not just the pressure in your tires that matters. Your tires depend on the tread to give you traction on the road, and it’s especially important in slippery conditions. Look for signs of wear in your tires – and also look for any bulges or odd lumps that could indicate a problem. Low tread or bulges in the tires can cause slipping or a blowout on the road, and lead to an accident.

The Air Filter

A clogged air filter will cost you in fuel consumption, and it’s bad for the car as well. It costs very little to get it checked and replaced as needed, so make it a regular part of your car maintenance routine. Most places will check it for you when they change your oil free of charge.

The Transmission Fluid

Your transmission failing while driving is not something you ever want to experience. Make sure that the transmission fluid is always at a good level and is changed periodically to make sure your car can shift smoothly and keep you in control of the car at all times.

The Lights – All of Them

Having any of the lights on your car not functioning properly is dangerous. Be sure to check your turn signals, brake lights, reverse lights and of course your headlights on a regular basis. Although you are likely to catch a headlight that is out, you could easily miss a brake like or taillight that doesn’t function right. These things are vital to letting other vehicles know what you are doing or about to do – and preventing accidents. You could also get a ticket for having a light out, which could mean higher car insurance rates.
Keep your car in good running condition and it will keep you safe and in control on the road. It takes a short amount of time to check these important functions, but can save money, fuel, and even lives in the long run. Make sure the functions of your car aren’t the only thing you’re checking

History of Bentley Motors

History of Bentley Motors

"To build a fast car, a good car, the best in its class.”

                                                                                    (W.O. Bentley, Founder)

Bentley Motors was founded by W.O. Bentley. The first car to bear his name pulled out of New Street Mews, London in 1919.
From modest beginnings, the company moved from strength to strength – in a relentless pursuit of both luxury and performance. Were it not for the brand’s five victories at Le Mans in the 1920s, plus a sixth in 2003, this combination could be seen as a contradiction in terms. In which case, it could be said that Bentley continues to create the most acclaimed contradictions on the road today.
Almost a century later, W.O.'s vision continues to guide our beliefs, actions and ambitions. Located in Crewe, England and owned by Volkswagen AG since 1998, Bentley Motors remains the definitive British luxury car company, crafting the world’s most desirable high performance grand tourers.

The definition of luxury may have nothing to do with the streets but, paradoxically, it can be seen roaming through some of the least expected places, rims glimmering, wood and chrome finished steel bulk rolling silently through concrete labyrinth passage ways. It's an automobile that goes great with yachts and French Riviera vacations as well as New Zealand wool pin stripe suits and finely designed porcelain buttons embedded in solid gold.

Bentley has been a provider of quality stand-out privileged social and financial statement-vehicles since 1919. Founded by Walter Owen Bentley (1888-1971), Bentley Motors has grown into a world leading car-maker and also a symbol of Great Britain, as well as sole provider of wheels for the Queen through the 2002 released State Limousine.

The company's founder had primarily been known for designing and making reliable rotary engines that were fitted on aircraft during World War I, before successfully entering the auto-world. Before becoming notorious with the Bentley BR1 aero-engine during the war, Bentley had been in partnership with his brother H.M., selling French D.F.P. cars. It was during those times that he thought of establishing his own car-making business.

Soon after Bentley Motors was formed in January, 1919, the company was "allowing" Walter Owen to exhibit a chassis with an engine replica at the London Motor Show. The design was a success and the orders poured in. However, the company was unable to carry the deliveries out in time, with the first cars being ready for shipping only in September 1921, one year later than initially estimated.

Although, it had a lot of fans and enjoyed great value on the UK market, the company suffered a fate similar to that of  Aston Martin, undergoing several ownership changes and financial trouble. Fortunately enough, its allies were constantly on the look-out and possessed vast riches that they used to keep Bentley on track.

Bentley was acquired by millionaire and 'Bentley Boy' enthusiast Wolf Barnato, who became the new owner of the company in 1925. Despite the steady cash flow that was used to stop Bentley Motors from sinking, the Great Depression wiped clean any desire for expensive automobiles, leaving Bentley poor and disoriented.

This time, help would come from giants from Rolls Royce, who bought the work shop in 1931. Thanks to the 'Bentley Boys', the marque managed to stay afloat and gained racing acclaim, with Barnato participating in the Le Train Bleu race (he drove in traffic from Cannes to Calais and finished first). Consequently, the model became known as the Blue Train Bentley. Moreover, further victories would be obtained by Bentley in the famous endurance race 24 hours of le Mans, the British carmaker emerging victorious for four consecutive times, between 1927 and 1930.

Until entering under the Rolls Royce tutelage, Bentley fitted a variety of engines on their cars: from the classic 3L and 4.5 Blower Bentley engine to the 6L or massive 8L mechanical heart in the 30's. Before parting ways with the Rolls Royce parent company in 1998 and moving to VW grounds, Bentley had greatly improved their offers and technological improvements, especially after becoming a separate car line again during the 80's. Models such as the type R, S and Continental represented only a small fraction of what would come in the following years. Later models included the beautiful Azure convertible, the Turbos Sport R and S models and the competitive Brooklands.

Starting with 1998, German carmaker VW Group took over as Bentley's parent company in a profitable partnership with BMW. The agreement between the two parts stated that VW would make both Bentley and Rolls Royce cars until 2002, when the rights to manufacture Rolls Royce vehicles would pass entirely to BMW. Until 2003, BMW was a constant supplier of engines for both car lines. Soon after BMW's withdrawal, the company launched a new model that would become even more popular than the Azure: the Continental GT. In fact, demands were so numerous that Bentley was reacquainted with the situation form the 20's, when it was unable to meet demands. The latest models from the British carmaker include the 2005 Continental Flying Spur saloon, the 2006 Azure convertible and it's Continental GT counterpart, and the 2008 Brooklands and GT Speed Coupe.

History of BMW

History of BMW

BMW AG originated with three other manufacturing companies, Rapp Motorenwerke and Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFw) in Bavaria, and Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach in Thuringia. Aircraft engine manufacturer Rapp Motorenwerke became Bayerische Motorenwerke in 1916. The engine manufacturer, which built proprietary industrial engines after World War I, was then bought by the owner of BFw who then merged BFw into BMW and moved the engine works onto BFw's premises. BFw's motorcycle sideline was improved upon by BMW and became an integral part of their business.

BMW became an automobile manufacturer in 1929 when it purchased Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach, which, at the time, built Austin Sevens under licence under the Dixi marque.[1] BMW's team of engineers progressively developed their cars from small Seven-based cars into six-cylinder luxury cars and, in 1936, began production of the BMW 328 sports car. Aircraft engines, motorcycles, and automobiles would be BMW's main products until World War II. During the war, against the wishes of its director Franz Josef Popp, BMW concentrated on aircraft engine production, with motorcycles as a side line and automobile manufacture stopped altogether.

After the war, BMW survived by making pots, pans, and bicycles until 1948, when it restarted motorcycle production. Meanwhile, BMW's factory in Eisenach fell in the Soviet occupation zone and the Soviets restarted production of pre-war BMW motorcycles and automobiles there. This continued until 1955, after which they concentrated on cars based on pre-war DKW designs. BMW began building cars in Bavaria in 1952 with the BMW 501 luxury saloon. Sales of their luxury saloons were too small to be profitable, so BMW supplemented this with building Isettas under licence. Slow sales of luxury cars and small profit margins from microcars caused the BMW board to consider selling the operation to Daimler-Benz. However, Herbert Quandt was convinced to purchase a controlling interest in BMW and to invest in its future.

Quandt's investment, along with profits from the BMW 700, brought about the BMW New Class and BMW New Six. These new products, along with the absorption of Hans Glas GmbH, gave BMW a sure footing on which to expand. BMW grew in strength, eventually acquiring the Rover Group (most of which was later divested), and the license to build automobiles under the Rolls-Royce marque.

On July 16, 1909 automotive pioneer August Horch founded August Horch Automobilwerke GmbH in Germany. A short time later he renamed the company after the Latin translation of his last name – making it Audi Automobilwerke.

In 1932, Audi merged with Horch, DKW and Wanderer, to form Auto Union AG. The four rings of the Audi badge symbolize the brands Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer. Before World War II, Auto Union AG used the four interlinked rings, only on Auto Union racing cars in that period. Member companies used their own names and emblems.

Auto Union GmbH was established in Ingolstadt on September 3rd, 1949 following a series of changes as WWII came to an end.

Daimler-Benz AG acquired the majority of and finally the remaining shares in Auto Union GmbH on April 24th, 1958. From this date until the end of 1965, Auto Union was a fully owned subsidiary of the Stuttgart-based Daimler Group.

Volkswagenwerk AG acquired the majority of shares in Auto Union GmbH in December 1964, with Audi becoming a fully owned VW subsidiary from the end of 1966.

In March 1969, NSU Motorenwerke AG, which had just been taken over by VW, and the Ingolstadt-based Auto Union GmbH merged to form Audi NSU Auto Union AG.

In March 1980, a four-wheel-drive sports coupé was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show. The Audi Quattro was the first high-performance vehicle with four-wheel drive. This drive concept had previously only been used on trucks and off-road vehicles. The permanent four-wheel-drive system in the Audi Quattro enjoyed worldwide success in motor sport and gradually found its way into the entire Audi model range.

In January 1985, Audi NSU Auto Union AG was renamed AUDI AG. At the same time the company moved its head office from to Ingolstadt. From this time forward automobiles and the company had the same name.

Auto maintenance,

All cars have maintenance schedules recommended by their manufacturers, but those schedules only apply if there are no irregularities with the operation of your vehicle.
To qualify for normal maintenance, the car can’t be used to tow a trailer, driven in a dusty environment or used off-road. The car also must be driven until it is fully warmed under highway conditions. Unfortunately, these conditions don’t apply to most cars.

Auto maintenance describes the act of inspecting or testing the condition of car subsystems (e.g., engine) and servicing or replacing parts and fluids. Regular maintenance is critical to ensure the safety, reliability, drivability, comfort and longevity of a car. During preventive maintenance, a number of parts are replaced to avoid major damage or for safety reasons, e.g. timing belt replacement.

The actual schedule of car maintenance varies depending on the year, make, and model of a car, its driving conditions and driver behavior. Car makers recommend the so-called extreme or the ideal service schedule based on impact parameters such as

Since very few cars qualify for the normal maintenance schedule, they must be maintained using the severe-use maintenance schedule. This maintenance schedule should be used if any of the following are true about the car’s use:

Most trips with the car are less than 5 – 10 miles
The car is often driven in stop and go traffic
The car is used to pull a trailer or has a roof carrier
The car is used for commercial purposes
  • number of trips and distance traveled per trip per day
  • extreme hot or cold climate conditions
  • mountainous, dusty or de-iced roads
  • heavy stop-and-go vs. long-distance cruising
  • towing a trailer or other heavy load
  • Experienced service advisors in dealerships and independent shops recommend schedule intervals, which are often in between the ideal or extreme service schedule. They base it on the driving conditions and behavior of the car owner or driver.

Jaguar Cars History

Jaguar is the luxury vehicle brand of Jaguar Land Rover, a British multinational car manufacturer with its headquarters in Whitley, Coventry, England, owned by the Indian company Tata Motors since 2008

Jaguar's business was founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922, originally making motorcycle sidecars before developing bodies for passenger cars. Under the ownership of S. S. Cars Limited the business extended to complete cars made in association with Standard Motor Co many bearing Jaguar as a model name. The company's name was changed from S. S. Cars to Jaguar Cars in 1945. A merger with the British Motor Corporation followed in 1966,[8] the resulting enlarged company now being renamed as British Motor Holdings (BMH), which in 1968 merged with Leyland Motor Corporation and became British Leyland, itself to be nationalised in 1975.

Jaguar was de-merged from British Leyland and was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1984, becoming a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index until it was acquired by Ford in 1990.[9] Jaguar has, in recent years, manufactured cars for the British Prime Minister, the most recent delivery being an XJ in May 2010.[10] The company also holds royal warrants from Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles.[11]

Jaguar cars today are designed in Jaguar Land Rover's engineering centres at the Whitley plant in Coventry and at their Gaydon site in Warwickshire, and are assembled in their plants at Castle Bromwich and Solihull.

Maybach Exelero ($8.0M)

Maybach Exelero ($8.0M)

A one-off custom-built Maybach was unveiled in May 2005 at the Tempodrom in Berlin. Commissioned by tyre company Fulda, the Exelero is a chopped-down two-seater coupe, though it's more than just a show car - in tests at the Nardo high-speed oval, the prototype reached a speed of 218.38mph, despite weighing over 2.66 tonnes. It is capable of acceleration from 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds.

The car's design was the result of a competition amongst students at the Pforzheim Polytechnic Department of Transport Design, which has worked on show vehicles for Fulda in the past. The design of 24-year-old Fredrik Burchhardt was chosen, and his work was co-ordinated with that of the Maybach design centre in Sindelfingen. The project, based on the Maybach 57 limousine, required a certain amount of re-engineering; the A-pillar and doors had to be shifted rearwards, and the steering column, pedals and gearshift all re-located. The standard 550bhp V12 engine was bored out to 5.9 litres, and tuned for 700bhp and over 738lb ft of torque. With final dimensions of 5890mm long, 2140mm wide and just 1390mm high, the car was kitted out with a full-spec interior, including leather, neoprene, aluminium and carbonfibre finishes.

Maybach says the car, built by Stola in Turin, is "a one-off vehicle created to showcase the new ultra-high performance Exelero tyre range from leading tyre manufacturer Fulda"; it's not the first time the two companies have teamed up, as back in 1938 Fulda demonstrated its tyres on a Maybach SW 38 limousine. There are, however, "no plans to produce the model in series", though it has been certified for on-road use.

Rezvani Beast Alpha

Rezvani Beast Alpha

Plenty of manufacturers sought to use last weeks LA Auto Show 2016 to launch their latest hardware. Aston Martin for example launched the Vanquish S while Lamborghini launched the Huracan RWD Spyder, both without stepping foot in the convention centre. Rezvani adopted a similar approach, unveiling the Rezvani Beast Alpha in Los Angeles last week.

The Rezvani Beast is now a year old. The version we saw before was open-top based upon the Ariel Atom. It had a 2.4-litre Honda Civic sourced four-cylinder engine with 500 hp and a 2.7 second 0 to 100 km/h time. This latest version has a targa top and is said to be built upon a Lotus-sourced aluminium monocoque instead.

An evolutionary addition to the lineup, the Rezvani Beast Alpha pairs pure sports car performance with new features like a targa-style top, trademark SideWinder doors, and Apple CarPlay. Tack on 500 horsepower and a signature Rezvani design, and other sports cars better watch their backs.
Performance

0-60 MPH in 3.2 Seconds
K24 DOHC 2.4L Turbocharged with Intercooler
500 Horsepower
6-Speed Manual Gearbox
Sequential Automatic Optional
Body (Carbon Fiber)

Weight: 1,950 Pounds (884KG)
Height: 43.5 Inches (1104.9 mm)
Length: 165.2 Inches (4,145 mm)
Width: 80.1 Inches (1,981 mm)
Wheelbase: 92.3 Inches (2,345 mm

The Alpha is a fundamental redesign rather than a simple additional model for the range. It gets full carbon fibre panels with new front and rear facia together with a new set of side-mounted air vents. The rear gets a new central exhaust port together with overhead rear vents.
The Beast Alpha adds a smattering of additional features including the removable targa-style top and patented SideWinder doors. The doors are a particularly impressive detail. The Beast Alpha gets unique 18-inch forged alloy wheels with 19-inch forged alloy wheels optional.

In total, the Rezvani Beast Alpha weighs in at just 1,950 lbs (884 kgs). The engine is an Acura K24 base, rebuilt by Rezvani to include turbocharger, ported cylinder heads, reengineered camshaft profiles, unique aluminium pistons and CrMo connecting rods.

The modifications are enough for 500 hp of output and a 3.2 second 0 to 60 mph time. With the sequential gearbox option, 3.4 second sprint times are possible together with a 175 mph top speed. The power to weight ratio is 2.56 pound per horsepower.

Types of Loans

Home loan:

Everyone dreams of having their own home. But buying a property requires lot of money and is not possible for people of lower class to collect that much money at once. Banks are now providing home loans which can be helpful to you in buying a property.Home loans can be of many types:

Personal loans are meant to meet the personal needs of an individual. People can use this money for anything they want. If your FD is of around 100,000 you can apply for loan of around 80,000. The rate of interest you pay for this amount is a bit higher than the interest paid by the bank for the fixed deposit. Still it is the best way to have a loan.

Over Draft:

Over Draft is a procedure of requesting for loans from banks. This means the customers withdraws more money than he has deposited from any particular bank.

Cash Credit:

Cash credit is the payment done by the bank to the customers in advance. This facility allows the borrowers to borrow a certain amount of money from bank. Few securities and are provided by the borrower to the bank. This can be renewed every year. And the borrowers can complete their pending work by the money they get from the banks.

Loans against shares or mutual funds:

Most of the people also present their shares and mutual funds to the banks for having loan. The banks provide loans of amount lesser that the total amount in the share. Lesser amount is given by the lender as loan since the rate of interest can also be added once the borrower is unable to pay back.
Loans although are beneficial but if you have to pay more than 70% of your salary as an installment of loan you may face financial problems. Therefore, if you are taking loan against mutual funds or shares you should be smart enough to utilize the money in the best way and be able to pay back the amount within the given time.
Loans have fulfilled the dreams of many people. The people who were not that rich are also preparing their children for exams of reputed colleges. Loans have provided study, home and other facilities to the people.

Home Equity Loans

Home Equity Loans

Home equity loans are closely related to home equity lines of credit (HELOCs), but there are subtle differences that make them distinct borrowing entities. Both home equity loans and home equity lines of credit use a consumer’s home as collateral based on the equity built up in the home. Additionally, both of these loan options have favorable interest rates when compared to other forms of borrowing and the interest can be written off on taxes.

Both typically are used to pay off things like home improvement projects, credit card debt, student loans and other forms of debt.

However, there are slight differences that make it important for consumers to examine both opportunities closely before deciding which is appropriate.

Home Equity Loans Act Like A Second Mortgage

A home equity loan gives the borrower a lump sum of money that is paid back over a fixed time and carries a fixed interest rate. In this way, it operates very much like a mortgage or auto loan.

How much you would be able to borrow is based on the amount of equity you have in your home. Equity is defined as the current value of the house minus how much is owed. So, for example, if your home is worth $150,000 and you owe $100,000, then you have $50,000 in home equity.

Most lenders offer 80 percent loan-to-value rates based on the amount of equity in your home. Using the example above, if you have $50,000 in home equity you would likely receive a loan of $40,000 ($50,000 X .80 = $40,000).

The borrower would receive $40,000 in a lump sum for use on whatever project or bill he wished to resolve. Repayments begin immediately on a monthly basis at a fixed interest rate. The rate will vary, depending on the lender and your credit score. The typical repayment period is spread over 25 years. In 2015, home equity loan interest rates average around 6%, with some as low as 4%.

Buyers Beware

Home equity loans can be very useful if the goal is to gain quick access to money and use it to increase your home’s value or improve your future job prospects by getting a college degree. However, there are downsides that should be considered before making a final decision.

A home equity loans is a secured loan, meaning your house is at risk because you have put it up as collateral. If unforeseen circumstances arise like a job loss or serious medical condition and you are unable to make payments, your home could go into foreclosure.

There is the matter of closing costs and interest rate charges that can add up quickly if you already are paying a mortgage. There also is the possibility of an early-termination fee, if you decide to pay it off early.

Another serious issue is volatility in the real estate market. Home equity is not static, meaning if the market plunges, like it did in 2008, home values can decrease, affecting the equity you have in your home. When volatile markets affect home equity, it can make it very difficult to sell your home.

If the real estate market in your area is prone to dramatic swings, it may be wise to consider other options, such as mortgage modifications, as an alternative to home equity loans

Help For Auto Loan

Auto Loans

Not all car loans are alike. The most common types of car loans include:
Simple Interest Loans are the most common type of auto financing available. The interest rate is based on the outstanding balance of the loan. Borrowers can save on interest costs by paying more than their standard
monthly payment.
Pre-Computed Loans refer to financing where all interest and principal payments are pre-calculated before the borrower and lender agree and sign the paperwork. Although this loan was widely used in the past, most people don’t opt for this restrictive method of financing because it doesn’t allow for early repayment of the loan.
Much more risky is borrowing money based on equity in the car you already own. These car title loans mostly appeal to people who have fallen on hard times and need cash they cannot borrow elsewhere. Interest rates on these short-term loans can be sky-high, and a borrower who fails to pay can find himself deeper in debt and at risk of losing his car.

Now that you understand the various loan options available for purchasing a car, buyers have a number of potential sources for securing the necessary financing.

The most common places to secure auto loans are:
Banks. Getting financed through a bank is typically the easiest route because commercial and private banks have large pools of capital. A bank could be your best bet if you are looking for the lowest interest rate. Banks can also be a quicker and more convenient source for car loans because they are structured to make a large number of transactions in a short period of time.
Credit Unions. These nonprofit organizations can offer competitive interest rates, but you need to be a member to utilize their services. Criteria for membership varies, but credit unions may focus on people who work in specific industries, live in a certain area or belong to a particular group.
Car Dealerships. Car dealerships offer financing to help sell cars. They often have established relationships with lenders, which can help you get a loan quickly and without a lot of legwork on your part. Keep in mind, however, that dealers typically make a considerable profit on loans, so it pays to understand the interest rate and other terms being offered.
Home Equity Loans. These are an alternative to a traditional auto loan. Financial institutions often lend money to borrowers based on the equity in their homes, called a home equity loan. This money can be used for many purposes but a popular one with many borrowers is buying a new or used vehicle. One particularly attractive feature is that interest on these loans is typically tax-deductible.
How Does Car Loan Interest Work?

The typical automobile loan is calculated using simple interest, meaning you pay interest only on the principal owed.

This is similar to the method used in repaying mortgages and student loans, but vastly different from the method used with credit cards, where compound interest creates a much larger bill for the borrower.

For example, a simple interest automobile loan of $18,000 at an interest rate of 9.9 percent (typical in 2015 for someone with credit score of 640) would mean monthly payments of $332.55 and cost $23,944 when the loan is paid off.

Compare that to the same loan, using compound interest. The $18,000 loan would end up costing $32,522. Interest payments alone would be $14,523. That is why credit card debt builds so rapidly and why you should insist on a simple interest loan when buying a car.

Car Loan Rate Tied To Credit Score

Your credit score determines how much of the car a lender is willing to finance. You probably have heard advertisements for “zero percent interest” from dealers. They do exist, but you must have a credit score of 750 or higher to get them.

If you have bad credit (such as a credit score under 550), the best you can hope for is they will finance 80% of the car’s value and you will have to make up the remaining 20% with a down payment.

Credit scores and interest rates operate in a see-saw fashion on auto loans. As your credit score rises, the interest rate you pay drops. If your credit score drops, the interest rate goes up.

For example, in 2015, a credit score of 740 would get you a 72-month loan at 2.9%. A credit score 100 points lower (640) and you’ll be paying 9.9%. Drop another 20 points to 620 and the rate goes up to 12.49%.

To put that in dollar terms, if you finance $18,000 for the car, the difference between a very good credit score (740) and an average score (640) is $4,311 over the life of the loan. The difference between the very good and poor score (620) is $6,035 over the course of six years.

Car Loan With Bad Credit

It is not impossible to buy a new car with bad credit, but lending institution can make it very difficult and definitely expensive.

Lenders know they are at considerable risk by making car loans to people with bad credit or no credit so they take as many steps as possible to minimize the danger. It is not unusual for them to ask for a substantial down payment and charge an interest rate that is at least 10 points higher than someone with good credit pays.

This allows the banks to get closer to break even if the borrower defaults on the loan two or three years after purchase. A car loan is a secured, which means the vehicle serves as collateral on the debt. If you fail to make your payments, the lender can seize it as payment. This is much safer for the lender than unsecured debt, such as a credit card account, where the lender has only the card-holder’s promise to pay.

A borrower with bad credit has some financing choices, but they are limited. The borrower’s best recourse is to start with a clean record, meaning pay off any outstanding car loans and other debts before shopping for a new car. That not only improves your credit score, it allows time to save up a down payment. Another option is a shorter loan term. Although the average car loan is 72 months or longer, ask for a 48-month term and the interest rate will drop by a percentage point or two.

The next possible option is to save until you have a large down payment. If you can cover at least 20-30 percent of the cost with a down payment and take advantage of any dealer incentives and rebates when buying the car, you help avoid being in an upside-down position when financing the car. You may still have to pay double-digit interest rates at the start of a loan, depending on your credit score, but two or three years down the road, you can look for an opportunity to refinance the loan when your credit score has improved.

If you have poor or no credit you should also consider purchasing a used car that is 1-to-3 years old. You would enjoy a sizeable reduction in price, which means borrowing less and paying less interest in the process. The good news is that interest rates on financing a late model car should be similar, if not exactly the same, as purchasing the car new.

Negotiating A Better Car Deal

There may be room to negotiate the final price of the car, but there is little or no room to bargain when it comes to financing the car.

Smart buyers know their credit score before they start looking for a car and use that information to get pre-approved for a loan from their bank or credit union.

When you decide the car model you want to buy, it’s possible to take the terms from your bank into the dealership and ask them to beat it, but only if your credit score supports it.

Most dealerships have relationships of their own with banks and credit unions, but use a customer’s credit score as the measuring stick for what interest rate to charge on the loan. It’s possible there might be a light difference, but seldom enough to change a deal.

What About Leasing

As car costs have risen, leasing has become a popular alternative to buying. In recent years, leases have comprised more than 30% of new vehicle transactions.

On the surface, leasing and buying with a loan may look similar. Both involve payments over time, but what you are buying is different.

With a car loan, you eventually will pay off the loan and own the car. Your payments end and you have the option of keeping the car as long as you like — or as long as you can keep it running – or selling it.

With a lease, you likely will have a lower down payment, lower monthly payments and lower maintenance costs compared to taking out an auto loan. This is part of the appeal of a lease.

However, at the end of the lease you do not own the car. At this point you have two options: buy the vehicle, which can require taking out a loan, or begin a whole new lease
